Victorian teacher salaries are competitive with Ontario’s. You can live perfectly well on a teacher’s salary in Australia if you are attentive to a budget. I know quite a few people who travel as much as they like and go out as much as they like on a teacher’s salary: I’m one of them.
But many teachers do not want to be committed to a full-time position when they come to Australia to travel. On a Working Holiday VISA there aren’t any working restrictions.
Considering there is a water-shortage in Australia, and the Australian press has made citizens very worried about water usage, the prices of water hasn’t really increased. I would think that if they really wanted people to cut down on their water use, they would start charging more for it…but that’s for another discussion.
You Want to Know About Moving Here:
Costs: your bills will be about the same that you paid in Ontario. Unless your bills are all included, you can expect to spend around $150 per month.
Set-up: you have to make phone calls to have your utilities connected. It is not automatic. And, it might not be immediate. It took a couple of days into our rent being paid before the electricity came on.
What Bills Will I have to Pay in Australia?
The billing process is very similar to Canada. You pay for water and electricity—and check whether you also have to pay for gas. Water and stoves might be heated differently than your light switches.
Here are slang terms to help you understand where to find things and what people are directing you towards when you arrive. Aussies are very friendly and helpful, just like in Canada, but you might confuse them if you don’t know these basic places.
Newsagencies = little paper shops…it’s very British over here…you can get magazines and agendas and white-out here–all your teacher needs!

Walking down Desgraves Street towards a class I was taking at the CAE, I ordered a strong latte from the little cafe across the road. (A safe way to tell who serves this grind by the very Italian-looking sign they stick out of their cafes). I’m not kidding–it was the best coffee I’ve had yet. I didn’t even have sugar in it! (more…)
